Leave These 5 Things Off Your Resume

Leave These 5 Things Off Your ResumeLeave These 5 Things Off Your ResumeYour resume is one of a million. And job recruiters are only spending five to seven seconds looking at it.With odds like that, if your resume isnt up to par, your chances at getting noticed are pretty slim.Surprisingly, many job seekers still make mistakes on their resume, some straightforward and some less so. Leave these five things off your resume to help set you on the right career path.1. Poor GrammarRecruiters cite improper grammar as one of the biggest reasons they immediately end consideration for applicants. More than three-quarters of business executives say a single typo is all it takes for them to rule out a candidate.Remember that your resume is your first impression. If its laden with improper grammar, what impression does that give recruiters?Grammatical errors, misspellings and other mistakes raise a red flag regarding your communication skills and attention to detail.Proofread your resume yoursel f, and then have someone else do it. If youre really driven to land a new job, ask a professional to help write and edit your resume.2. ReferencesReferences available upon request is outdated and unnecessary. If an employer is interested in your references, they will ask for them. Youre limited on space with your resume, so every hundertprozentig on the page needs to have purpose. These words are a waste of space.Additionally, if a potential employer were to ask for your references, you should also give those individuals some notice that they may be contacted. Give them some background on the opportunity and how you think they can help you nail the job.3. Irrelevant Professional ExperienceYour resume should be a snapshot of why you are right for the specific position to which youre applying. If youre submitting your resume to the accounting assistant job ad, its best to leave off the time you spent as a dog walker in college. The experiences on your resume should be related to the po sition and/or the industry any previous jobs that dont help your case should be removed.Read about how to tailor your resume to the job 4. Outdated AccomplishmentsOne of the top resume mistakes people make is filling their resumes with awards and prizes, including being named class clown for their senior year in high school. When reviewing these accomplishments, make sure they make sense and are professional and relevant.5. Detailed High School and College YearsHigh school and college courses are also outdated information that you should omit. Simply listing the name of the school and your degree are all you need. If you have a college degree, remove your high school information entirely.A list of courses is generally not necessary, and only include impressive information such as scholarships and educational recognitions (like graduating cum laude or earning a spot on the Deans List). If you are just graduating college or if youre applying for an internship while in school, this woul d be the only time that including some relevant coursework or a summary of your thesis project could be helpful and relevant.Use Your Limited Space WiselyA few seconds is not a lot of time to make a good impression. Use that time wisely and ensure youve checked for spelling and grammar errors and that you dont have unnecessary lines of text on your resume referring to references available upon request. Finally, make sure that you havent wasted space with irrelevant professional experience, outdated accomplishments or overly detailed high school and college information.Build your resume to get the job of your dreams

12 Ways to Tell Youre Not Going to Get a Job Offer

12 Ways to Tell Youre Not Going to Get a Job Offer12 Ways to Tell Youre Not Going to Get a Job OfferOne of the worst parts ofjob searchingis not hearing back from employers, even after an interview. Unfortunately, that landseems to be the norm these days rather than the exception. So you might consider yourself lucky if you hear any feedback at all during the interview process. But even when a hiring manager does provide feedback - often in response toyour inquiry about where you stand- you may not get a straight answer. Its worth asking Why arent hiring managers direct about letting you know that the company does not intend to make an offer? One reason is that it can be uncomfortable to share bad news. This can lead hiring managers to avoid giving feedback entirely, or use cliched phrases that serve as a non-direct way of telling candidates that their chances do not look good. Another reason is that they dont want to say anything that could lead to a discrimination complaint. Or, t he company could simply be too busy to take the time to notify candidates. If youre lucky enough to get feedback, here are some of the things that you might hear from a hiring manager when they dont want to hire you but dont want to come right out and say it. 12 Ways to Know Youre Not Going to Get a Job Offer Be aware that in some cases, these sentiments from hiring managers may be genuine - not just a polite brush-off. It is possible, for instance, that hiring managers are waiting on feedback from key stakeholders, or negotiating departmental funding. That is, there is a possibility that you will get a job offer even after getting one of these responses. Still, in general, getting an email, phone call, or voicemail with one these statements is a sign that you will not be getting a job offer. We need to consider a few other candidates before making a decision. You are probably out of contention for the job. Telling you that the company is going to interview other applicants mean s youre not a top candidate.Ill keep your resume on file. There are few things that get filed these days and yourresumeprobably isnt going to be one of them. This is a way for hiring managers to avoid saying directly that you will not be getting a job offer. The position has been put on hold.Funding for the position has been put on hold. Its absolutely possible that these statements are accurate and the employer is holding-gesellschaft off on filling the position. The bottom line for you, though, it that they will likely re-start the hiring process from scratch when the hold is over. Were going to move forward with other candidates whose qualifications are an even stronger match. Although you are qualified for the position, weve decided to select another candidate. This is a nice way of telling you that youre not the right person for the job.We have decided to move in another direction.Another nice way of saying that you dont have the qualifications thehiring manageris seeking.Weve dec ided to keep the position open, but we are not moving forward at this point. Its not an outright no, but its doubtful you will hear anything more from the employer. We arent going to be filling the position right now.Theres a chance this is legitimate, and you might still have a chance at the job, but I wouldnt hold my breath waiting. In many cases, youll see the job advertised again. This job doesnt seem like the best fit for you.You may be able to salvage the opportunity if you can convince the employer you are a good fit for the job, but its a long shot. The job seems to be too junior for you. This job isnt big enough for you. When youre told that the job isnt the right level, thehiring manager thinks youre overqualifiedand wont stick around if youre hired. We have filled the position with an internal candidate. We have promoted someone from within.Maybe they have, and maybe they havent, but in either case, they arent hiring you.We feel like you wouldnt be stimulated enough here, and I would hate for you to be bored.Even if you didnt think the job would be boring, youre not going to have a chance to find out.It came down to two candidates, and her skills were slightly more in line with what were looking for.You didnt get the job, but at least you were close.

How hiring a CEO is the same as hiring anyone else

How hiring a CEO is the same as hiring anyone else How hiring a CEO is the same as hiring anyone else I can start off by confessing something: I am not a company executive. So I was as surprised as anyone that a chat with someone who hires executives for a living could teach me practical tips for getting hired. By the end, I turned to the nearest CEO saying “we’re not so different you and I.”Our CEO Dimitar just sort of shrugged and said “yeah, I know.” But that’s beside the point. Some things about hiring are universal and Cydnee Dubrof, managing director of The Dubrof Group executive search and talent consulting firm, taught me that. Here’s how.“You want to have a bespoke resume”One thing that came up early in our conversation was that Dubrof had encountered an resume before. She didn’t mince words about what happened: “I recently presented a candidate who had one of your resumes… it was not well received by my client. She found it too distracting. I agreed and also didn’t like it because it did not show her complete professional history. My clients hire me to show a complete picture.”Now at this moment, it would have been easy to get defensive. But I wanted to focus more on what the lesson was. After some back and forth, Dubrof said something illuminating. “Sexy, fun resumes are appropriate if you’re in an industry that’s graphically intense. I just helped the daughter of a friend who’s an artist and wants to be a dog walker so we put images of her art on her resume. But on a traditional executive’s resume graphics should take a back seat to data. Each resume should be curated or tailored to the person and the opportunity. You want to have a bespoke resume.”Suddenly, what could have easily turned into an argument over whether color and design elements mean you’re not serious turned into a discussion of what a resume should be. In fact, this matched perfectly with what my colleague Tatiana found in a recent experiment: that different audiences reacted differently to resumes with more personality. Specifically, she fo und that recruiters were far more conservative than CEOs.“… but it has to be thoughtful color.”In so many words, unlike the way hiring works for nearly everyone else, I’ve learned that executive recruiters have far more than six seconds to review a resume. They’re not just willing to parse through a half dozen or more detailed pages, it’s essential to ensure they’re hiring the right candidate. So using a 5+ page resume full of detail to apply for a mid-level salesperson job just doesn’t make sense. Just in the same way, using a breezy one page summary resume for that CEO job is probably not going to get a good reaction. If real estate is about “location, location, location” then resumes are about “audience, audience, audience”. Still, there are other elements that Dubrof says every resume can and should have.As she put it: “trust me, if I get a resume that has a little more color I’m happy to see it because they can get monotonous, but it has to be thought ful color.” Dubrof essentially argues that shorter isn’t always better, more personal isn’t always better, but more thoughtfully tailored to its audience is always a better approach for a resume regardless of the seniority of the position.LinkedIn is essential, but not enoughDubrof didn’t mince words about one of the quickest way to get crossed off her list: “LinkedIn is huge for me. I augment it with other research, but if a candidate doesn’t have a professional headshot and a coherent biography, s/he will get discounted quite frankly… And I will tell you a picture is worth a thousand words. You might be an absolutely fabulous executive, but if you pose for a headshot in a wifebeater or full disco makeup, I question your judgement.”Still, in spite of the importance that both AHA Foundation Executive Director George Zarubin and Dubrof ascribe to the platform, “LinkedIn is not enough. LinkedIn is simple one of your tools. I coach mid-career executives that are seeki ng to make a change that in addition to a professional LinkedIn profile they must have a polished resume, engaging cover letter, crisp elevator pitch and compelling career narrative.”Related articles:How to identify and embed your company culture to grow your businessWe are hiring a Head of Marketing in DublinHow job sharing can change the future of workQuestions we all need to start askingIn the end, most of us don’t apply for jobs the way CEO’s do. But Dubrof makes it clear that we can and should think about the job application process the way they do. That means considering every aspect of how we present ourselves from the perspective of the person who might be hiring us. What are they looking for? How much time do they have to consider me? How can I make choosing me as easy as possible?Whatever job you’re applying for, answering these questions is the first step towards success.

Paralyzed People as Waiters This Japanese Café Made It Happen

Paralyzed People as Waiters This Japanese Café Made It Happen Paralyzed People as Waiters This Japanese Café Made It Happen This month, the Dawn Avatar café was opened in Tokyo which used remotely controlled robots to serve customers. The best part? All of them were controlled by people with severe physical disabilities. The goal was to help them gain more independence in their lives. In total, there were 10 people working at the café. They were mostly people suffering from amyothropic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge? Or Stephen Hawking? It’s the same condition. The employees operated 4-foot robots called by Ory Labs called OriHime-D from their homes and were paid 1,000 yen ($9) per hour. Image by ArtFido For now, this was only a trial run. Unfortunately, the café remained open only for two weeks. Because for now, this was only a test. Yet, the story probably won’t end here. The organizations behind the project, including the Nippon Foundation and ANA Holdings Inc., aim to launch a permanent café by the time the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics roll around. Fine, fine, now tell me more about the robots! The robots were controlled in a similar way that Stephen Hawking used to control his hi-tech wheelchair- by tracking eye movements. In this way, the employees were able to move robots, make them pick up objects and even talk to customers. At the same time, the Dawn Avatar café, is only a part of a bigger trend in Japan, thanks to which robots are being increasingly used in the food industry. For instance, Sony recently showed off its vision of the home robot chef and has teamed up with Carnegie Mellon University to develop food robots. And Softbank recently hooked up with Toyota to form MONET, a venture that will build autonomous vehicles to do things like deliver robot-made meals. Image by ArtFido Robots as a way out for the imprisoned mind. All right, all of that might not sound like much of a deal to you, if you’re healthy. On the other hand, when you’re entirely paralysed, can’t move a finger or say a word, it becomes huge. Because your mind is still racing as if nothing happened. It’s just that with ALS, your body acts more like a prison, rather than a dependable part of your own being. Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments!

Sunscreen ingredients are absorbed into bloodstream says study

Sunscreen ingredients are absorbed into bloodstream says study Sunscreen ingredients are absorbed into bloodstream says study Sunscreens aren’t just protecting your skin - they’re also being absorbed into your body, a new study finds. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that several active ingredients used in popular sunscreen lotions entered a person’s bloodstream within one day of use.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The findingsFDA researchers had 24 participants randomly apply one of four sunscreen treatments between two types of sprays and a lotion or a cream to 75% of their body, around the same amount of skin that would normally be covered when wearing a bathing suit.Participants were to apply the sunscreen four times daily for four days using products that contained common ingredients used in different sunscreens: avobenzone, oxybenzone, ecamsule, and octocrylene.Blood samples were taken from each participant over seven days. Results from the pilot test showed all four ingredients entered the bloodstream which exceeded the FDA’s Threshold of Toxicological Concern (TTC).“The systemic absorption of sunscreen ingredients supports the need for further studies to determine the clinical significance of these findings,” write the study’s authors. The FDA encouraged the uses of sunscreens recommending an SPF-level of at least 15 to help prevent skin cancer.“The fact that an ingredient is absorbed through the skin and into the body does not mean the ingredient is unsafe. Rather, this finding calls for further testing to determine the safety of that ingredient for repeated use,” the FDA said.In Consumer Reports’ annual sunscreens report, all products featured in their top 10 contained oxybenzone, according to WebMD.Earlier this year, the FDA proposed a new rule to update requirements for most sunscreen products. The aim was to make products more up-to-date with scientific standards.American Academy of Dermatology pre sident George J. Jruza stressed for continued use of sunscreen. “These sunscreen ingredients have been used for several decades without any reported internal side effects in humans,” Hruza  said in a statement. “Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and dermatologists see the impact it has on patients’ lives every day. Unprotected exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays is a major risk factor for skin cancer.” You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Survive a Career Transition - The Muse

How to Survive a Career Transition - The Muse How to Survive a Career Transition When I was just starting out as a broadcast news reporter, a grizzled, veteran investigative reporter told me, “Congratulations on getting hired, kid, but don’t get cocky; because you’re not anybody in the news business until you’re fired- twice.” Whether or not I ever became somebody in the news business is debatable; but, for the record, I was fired twice during the 10 years I worked as an on-air reporter and anchor. Both times, what enabled me to overcome the stigma and humiliation of being canned can be summed up in one word- relationships. The relational approach to overcoming a “career bump” is showcased in a new career book titled Do Over by New York Times bestselling author Jon Acuff. In his book, he lists the four career transitions that every professional faces and the corresponding resources necessary to overcome each different transition. So, whether you, too, have been fired or just presented with an interesting opportunity, read on to learn the best strategy to deal with your specific circumstance. 1. You’ve Been Fired Immediately after I lost both jobs, I called all of my former colleagues to let them know I was out of work and looking for a gig. Each time, I was offered jobs within 72 hours because of the strong rapport I’d developed with colleagues over the years. Relying on relationships after being fired- as Acuff recommends- makes sense. From my experience, the toughest part was convincing myself to actually pick up the phone to ask for help. The key to surviving that particular transition is swallowing your pride, growing some guts, and giving your network the chance to lend a hand. Related: “Help Me Find a Job” Emails to Send to Your Network 2. You’re in a Dead-End Job The next transition that Acuff defines is “the ceiling,” which is a job that you continue to do even when further advancement isn’t possible. He writes that becoming unstuck in that type of situation requires the development of a new skill set. I recently ran into this exact situation at my previous company. My last employer- a mid-sized biotech firm- was acquired by a much larger pharmaceutical company. Suddenly, the previously vacant rungs of the corporate ladder above me were crammed with folks from the acquiring parent company. It was clear I wasn’t going to move up, and it was equally clear I couldn’t let skills stagnate. So, what did I do? I started blogging and writing e-books in my spare time. I joined (and learned the ins and outs of) the major social media channels. I guest posted and wrote for dozens of online sites. I became a self-taught social media “guru” within my previous company. When that organization wanted to dip its toe into Facebook waters or conjure up a Twitter-based-campaign strategy, I was the guy they tapped because I was already there doing it. But I didn’t stop there. I continued to build and nurture my personal online brand. Once I felt ready to leave the organization, I compiled a metrics scorecard of my personal social media footprint (Twitter followers, Facebook likes, Alexa ranking of my blog, and so on) and then compiled the exact same stats for the life sciences companies I wanted to work for. Needless to say, I beat the pants off every company I met with and had three job offers to choose from! Dealing with my “ceiling” required me to identify and develop the relevant skills that would add value to any prospective employer in the future. 3. You’ve Decided to Take a Leap The third career transition that Acuff cites is “the jump,” where you voluntarily leap to a new career, location, or responsibility. He notes that this type of transition requires strong character because you’re leaping into the unknown, which necessitates reliance on the foundational definition of who you are as well as your core values. During the past nine years, I’ve relocated my family three separate times across three different states. That’s a lot of “jumping” and disruption. My family has survived and thrived because we trust each other and consider every voice when we make big, life-impacting choices. For what it’s worth, each move has been a unanimous decision within my family. Mutual trust and agreement makes it so much easier to overcome upheaval. 4. You’re Faced With an Unplanned Opportunity The last transition that Acuff references in his book is dubbed “the opportunity,” where a positive situation unexpectedly manifests. While those moments tend to be few and far between for most people, Acuff writes that the resource you need to maximize “the opportunity” is hustle. He defines hustle as how you work. In other words, it’s the drive and commitment that pushes entrepreneurs and professionals to do the things that other people don't, enabling them to enjoy success that others won't. This situation happened to me when I transitioned out of news media into my first corporate communications job. I was hired by a regional telecommunications company in the Northeast to be its corporate spokesperson. After 90 days, I received an email from the HR department notifying me that I was eligible for the company’s educational benefit. I jumped at the chance, and- in two years of full-time course work and a full-time job- I completed my MBA. It wasn’t easy. Not only did it take a high degree of hustle, but it also took a lot of time. Part of hustle, therefore, is intentional time management and relentless prioritization. Things are going to happen in your career. Some of them will be good, others not so good. Some transitions you’ll orchestrate while some will be orchestrated at the hands of others. Regardless, if you couple relationships with guts, skills with foresight, character with mutual trust, and mix in aggressive hustle with kick-ass time management- nothing will stop you. Internship Expectations

Internship Expectations Internship Expectations Internships afford opportunities for those seeking to gain the skills required when seeking a full-time job in todays competitive job market. Many students who are looking to do an internship don’t know what to expect or what they should do first.   What Is an Internship An internship is a pre-professional experience whereby individuals get the required experience to get hired in a career field of interest. By completing an internship, students will develop the knowledge and skills employers seek in this competitive job market. Although courses taken in college can help prepare for a future career in a specific field, it is the experiential component that provides the skills necessary to enter a field and be successful. There are many types of internships available. An internship for an art student seeking experience in a museum will look very different than the internship that an environmental studies student might do to help improve the water quality in a local community. Just like jobs, internships come in all shapes and sizes, and there is no limit to the types of internships available since they can be anything that suits ones imagination. In addition to college students, there are many career changers who opt to do an internship to learn more about a career and get the necessary experience. Rather than going back to school immediately, doing an internship is a way to try out a new job or career without making a permanent commitment. Testing the waters by doing an internship may open doors and could lead to a new career that’s satisfying and rewarding. The Value of Doing an Internship Internships can open the door to getting a job. For college students, it’s important to complete the required courses to get a degree, but often it’s not enough to be able to crack the job market and get hired in the field. In addition to gaining the required knowledge and skills, internships also provide a snapshot of what it would be like working in a particular field. Researching careers and even doing informational interviews with people currently working in those fields can only provide a certain level of information but cannot give a true picture of the day to day activities of say a marine biologist or financial analyst in its true form. Internship for Credit Requirements Internships for credit may be a requirement for a particular major or even graduation which leaves no choice on if an internship should be done for credit. Meeting the academic requirements of a college curriculum is an important reason for doing an internship for credit. Internships for credit also add an academic component to an internship for credit. A faculty sponsor usually sets the criteria for students who are doing an internship for credit and may require a journal, essay paper, research project, or class presentation as an additional aspect of the actual internships. It’s important to realize that employers don’t usually have a preference that a student complete an internship for credit or event that a student gets paid for their internship experience. Employers are usually more interested in hiring an applicant that has the necessary knowledge and skills and finding someone who has had exposure to the field which hopefully reduces the likelihood that the new employee will leave because the job wasn’t what they expected. Fitting an Internship Into an Already Hectic College Schedule Internships may require anywhere from eight to forty hours per week. Internships for credit usually have a set number of hours that are required to meet the requirements of the college. Usually, it is between 130 and 150 hours required to get 3 college credits. Many employers, especially those near college campuses, offer very flexible hours for students to be able to attend classes while also completing an internship. Finding an Internship There are many ways to find an internship. The top three way are networking, online databases and listings, and prospecting. Networking Since networking is considered the top  job search strategy, it also can be very useful when searching for internships as well. Contacting family, friends, faculty, previous employers, and college alumni from your college may provide valuable leads on internships available. Don’t overlook this valuable technique when looking for an internship. Online Internship Databases/Company Websites The internet has provided a wealth of information for those who are looking for an internship. Checking with the Career Services Office at your college is a good place to start to find local, national, and international internships. The Career Services Office will generally devote a specific section on their website for students to find internships. If You Can’t Find an Internship You Want to Do Prospecting affords an opportunity to seek out unadvertised internship and job opportunities. If there is a specific employer youd like to work for, but you dont see any advertised openings, why not try contacting them directly to see if there are any potential internships or jobs opening up in the future.

Whether you took a few months off from your search and are just getting back into the swing of things, or you feel like you've been searching FOREVER and just aren't getting results, today's the day we're going to get your job search moving in the right direction! Here's a look at how I like to break down the job-search process: Consider the image above to be the framework for your job-search strategy. If you feel like you're getting stuck and you're unsure why, ask yourself the following questions: Q: Are my job goals clear and realistic? A set of well-defined job goals is the foundation for an effective job search. Your job goals will help you decide what information to highlight on your resume and LinkedIn profile, how to prioritize your networking connections and activities, and how to position your experience when you're pitching your skills to networking connections and prospective employers. If your job goals are still a little fuzzy, give these job-goal exercises a try. Q: Am Icustomizing my resume and cover letter for each position? Many employers use applicant tracking systemssoftware (or ATS, for short) to screen resume applications as they are submitted, rank them based on their information, and send only the most qualified candidates over to the recruiter or hiring manager for review. If your professional resume contains the same keywords that routinely pop up in your targetjob description, your application is in a better position to get past this digital gatekeeper. Click on the following link for step-by-step instructions tocustomize tailor your resumefor a job listing using resume keywords. It's important to note that you shouldn't overhaul your resume every time you submit a job application. Ideally, you should have a well-defined, specific job goal, so most of the job listings for which you apply should contain similar keywords and requirements. Collect a few job descriptions that reflect your current job goal and make a list of the keywords that are repeated throughout these job postings. Oftentimes, these keywords reflect the hard andsoft job skillsthat are required to do the job well. It could also include technical proficiencies and industry-specific terms. It's safe to say that if these words and phrases are showing up on multiple job posts in which you're interested, then they should be incorporated into your resume. Think of the resume customization process more like an evolution, rather than a complete resume rewrite for every job application. You may swap out a few resume keywords in the core competencies section and make slight edits to the content of your career summary and professional title at the top of the resume. Q: When was the last time I Googled my name? In today's marketplace, it's not enough to have a great resume and cover letter. Employers also want to investigate your online brand before offering you the job. In fact, a study by Jobvite found that 93 percent of recruiters will review a candidate's social profile before making a hiring decision. If you're not managing your personal branding, you could unknowingly hurt your chances of landing your dream job. Make sure your online presence is supporting the story being told in your resume and cover letter. Download a copy of my free personal branding checklist to get started. Q: Am I applying to the right jobs? How often? When done correctly, submitting a job application can be pretty tedious and time-consuming. The last thing you want to do is spend all that energy applying for a role that's not a good fit. Before you apply to another position, ask yourself these seven questions. Then, make sure you're customizing your resume and cover letter for each job application and leveraging your network to improve your chances of getting a callback. Also, be sure to keep an active pipeline of job leads. The worst thing you can do is to get so excited about an upcoming interview, you stop seeking out and applying to new job listings. In fact, I recommend finding a new, well-fitted job and applying to it the same day you land an interview. This will ensure you keep your job-search momentum going, regardless if that interview works out. While there isn't a specific job application goal I can offer that will guarantee a job offer, it's important to continuously mine for new job opportunities, on and offline, and pursue them on a weekly basis. Q: How often am I networking for work? If you've only been applying to positions online and are getting nowhere, networking may be the key to improving your search. More than one study has found that you are 10 times more likely to land a job when your job application is accompanied by an employee referral. However, to land these coveted referrals, you have to invest in your network. Your best bet is to find people who work for the company you're targeting, such as a friend, former colleague, fellow alumnus, or friend-of-a-friend, and request aninformational interview. These casual conversations can provide a goldmine of information to help you decide if the company is a good fit, better understand the company's hiring and interview process, and hopefully set you up with an employee referral so your application can skip over the initial gatekeepers and move on to the hiring manager. Q: Where am I getting stuck? Are you applying for job after job and never hearing back? Or, are you landing phone interviews without a problem but never making it to a face-to-face meeting? Or, perhaps are you making it to the final interview rounds but always ending up as the runner-up? Once you can pinpoint where your job search is getting stuck, it's easier to determine the right course of action to get your job search back on track. For instance, if you're feeling stuck in the resume black hole, it may be time to seek some professional help to rewrite your resume. Or, if your resume is solid, it may be a matter of reevaluating the jobs to which you're applying and the level to which you're customizing each job application. Use the questions above to diagnose your job search and figure out what's the next best step to unstick your stalled job hunt. 6 Things That Make You Look Amateur on Your Resume

6 Things That Make You Look Amateur on Your Resume 6 Things That Make You Look Amateur on Your Resume Not everyone has the golden resume, filled with impressive job experiences that any employer would be crazy to not consider. When we are just starting out, it can be hard to even fill the page of a resume; simply because we don't have the experience yet. But that's not a reason to have your resume look amateur. Here are six things that make your resume look less professional, and what you can do to avoid them:1. Short-term jobs. If you quit a job after a few weeks because you couldn't see your future there, don't put it on your resume. Employers look at short-term jobs as a sign that you're flighty, and you want to avoid that perception at all costs. If you have more short-term jobs (that relate to the one you want) than long-term, or many short-term consulting arrangements, you can add them into a section for one year. If you are listing many consulting assignments, make sure it's clear in your resume that it was not a full-time, permanent position.2. Job experience that doesn't relat e. If you're trying to work as an administrative assistant, but one of your past jobs was working as a restaurant server, leave that one off the list. However, if your job history doesn't provide enough experience for the Work History section of your resume, find ways to connect the unrelated work to what you want to do.For example, when you worked as a server, were there any tasks that related to the administrative assistant position you're vying for? You might be surprised to find that some of the skills you learned will translate for the job you want. Highlight these points in your resume. 3. Every responsibility you had at a job. Focus on a high level, and keep only what relates to the job you're applying for. A resume isn't the place to copy your job description; instead, it's meant to highlight the best of what you've done at past companies and tie it to what you will do with your next employer.4. References. While you do need a list of people who can vouch for you as an emplo yee and overall exemplary citizen, you don't have to include the list with your resume. And don't add the phrase "References Available Upon Request." It's a given you have and will provide references when it comes to that point in the interview process.5. Hobbies. Many argue that listing your hobbies on your resume gives the employer a better sense of your overall character. While that might be true, hobbies can also be used against you and employers can jump to conclusions about you before having the chance to meet you. Unless the hobby relates to the job you want and it's not covered in your job experience, keep it off.6. Why you left a job. Save this for the interview. Some job applications may ask for this information, but never volunteer it on your own. Explanations on your resume are required to be brief and could easily cast you in a negative light. It's much better to discuss this in person when you'll have the opportunity to explain further, if necessary.Lindsay Olson is a founding partner and public relations recruiter with Paradigm Staffing and Hoojobs.com, a niche job board for public relations, communications, and social media jobs.
